6013-T6 Aluminum
A 6000-series Al-Mg-Si-Cu alloy, one of the strongest in the series
Typical values for the temper in the title
6013 is an Al-Mg-Si alloy with added copper and manganese. These additions raise its strength above 6061: in T6 its tensile strength is about 400 MPa, versus 310 for 6061, and it can still be welded.
It has been used for fuselage sheet, machine parts and device enclosures, where 6061 is not enough and 2024 or 7075 are too difficult to machine and weld.

Common tempers
As in the 6000 series, the T6 temper gives maximum strength.
| Temper | Properties | When to choose it |
|---|---|---|
| T4 | naturally aged | for forming |
| T6 | Rm ≈ 400 MPa, Rp0.2 ≈ 365 MPa | maximum strength |
| T651 | as T6, stress relieved | for machining |
Applications
- Fuselage sheet
- High-strength machine parts
- Device enclosures
- Hydraulic systems and valves
- Brake components
Fabrication
Welding
Weldable, but as in all of the 6000 series the heat-affected zone weakens.
Machining
Machines well in T6.
Corrosion
The copper lowers corrosion resistance a little compared with 6061.
Compared with similar materials
| Material | Rm / Rp0.2 | Welding | When it is the better choice |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6061-T6 | 310 / 276 MPa | Good — ER4043 | more available and more corrosion resistant, at lower strength · material page |
| 2024-T4 | 470–480 / 325–345 MPa | Not recommended — Hot Cracking | similar strength, not weldable, better in fatigue · material page |
| 6082-T6 | 310 / 260 MPa | Good — ER4043 | a common European structural alloy · material page |
Common mistakes
Replacing 6061 with 6013 without checking corrosion
The copper lowers corrosion resistance. Check the environment.
Designing a welded structure to T6 strength
Strength drops significantly in the weld zone.
Looking for it in ordinary stock
6013 is less available than 6061 and 6082.
