6262-T9 Aluminum
A free-machining 6000-series Al-Mg-Si alloy
Typical values for the temper in the title
6262 is essentially 6061 with added lead and bismuth. These elements break the chip, so it machines almost like 2011, while keeping the corrosion resistance and anodizing ability of the 6000 series. In T9 its tensile strength is about 400 MPa.
It is the choice for high-volume machined parts that also need good corrosion resistance: fittings, brake parts, valves and hydraulic parts. As with 2011, the lead must be considered with regard to RoHS and similar regulations.

Common tempers
6262 is supplied mostly as drawn bar in the T6 and T9 tempers.
| Temper | Properties | When to choose it |
|---|---|---|
| T6 | artificially aged | good strength and free machining |
| T651 | as T6, stress relieved | for precise parts |
| T9 | Rm ≈ 400 MPa, Rp0.2 ≈ 345 MPa | aged and then cold worked: the highest strength |
Applications
- Automatic lathe parts that need corrosion resistance
- Hydraulic and pneumatic fittings
- Brake parts and valves
- Machined anodized parts
- Screws and nuts
Fabrication
Machining
Excellent: short, broken chips and a high finish, almost like 2011.
Corrosion and finishing
Much better corrosion resistance than 2011, and good anodizing.
Welding and regulations
Welding is not recommended because of the lead and bismuth. Because of the lead, RoHS and similar regulations must be considered. Lead-free versions exist.
Compared with similar materials
| Material | Rm / Rp0.2 | Welding | When it is the better choice |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2011-T3 | 370–405 / 295–310 MPa | Not recommended | slightly better machining, but much lower corrosion resistance · material page |
| 6061-T6 | 310 / 276 MPa | Good — ER4043 | when machining is less critical and welding or a lead-free alloy is needed · material page |
| 6082-T6 | 310 / 260 MPa | Good — ER4043 | for welded structural parts · material page |
Common mistakes
Welding 6262
The lead and bismuth cause cracking. For a welded part, choose 6061 or 6082.
Ignoring the lead
In products covered by RoHS or similar regulations, check in advance or choose a lead-free version.
Choosing 2011 when corrosion resistance is needed
If the part is exposed to moisture, 6262 is much better.
