7010-T7451 Aluminum
A 7000-series Al-Zn-Mg-Cu-Zr alloy, for thick aerospace plate
Typical values for the temper in the title
7010 is an Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloy with zirconium, developed in the UK for thick aerospace plate, on the same idea as 7050 in the USA: zirconium instead of chromium, so less quench sensitivity and properties that hold even at the center of thick plate.
In T7451 its tensile strength is about 503 MPa. It is used for structural parts machined from thick plate, such as frames and bulkheads.

Common tempers
As with all aerospace 7xxx alloys, the choice is between strength and stress corrosion resistance.
| Temper | Properties | When to choose it |
|---|---|---|
| T7651 | higher strength | good exfoliation resistance |
| T7451 | Rm ≈ 503 MPa, Rp0.2 ≈ 438 MPa | a balance of strength and stress corrosion resistance |
| T7351 | lower strength | maximum stress corrosion resistance |
Applications
- Aircraft frames and bulkheads
- Parts machined from thick plate
- Wing components
- Military aerospace structures
- Parts where 7075-T6 is too sensitive
Fabrication
Machining
Machines well. The stress-relieved tempers (Tx51) allow a lot of material to be removed without significant distortion.
Welding
Fusion welding is not recommended. Friction stir welding (FSW) is possible.
Corrosion and protection
The overaged tempers improve resistance to stress corrosion cracking and exfoliation, but protection is still applied: conversion coating, anodizing and paint.
Compared with similar materials
| Material | Rm / Rp0.2 | Welding | When it is the better choice |
|---|---|---|---|
| 7050-T7451 | 496–531 / 434–469 MPa | Not recommended | the American counterpart, more common · material page |
| 7075-T6 | 503–572 / 434–503 MPa | Not recommended — FSW | for thin parts, more available · material page |
| 7085-T7452 | 483 / 421 MPa | Not recommended | for very thick plate · material page |
Common mistakes
Welding
7xxx alloys with copper are not suited to fusion welding. Join with rivets and bolts.
Substituting a temper without checking
The overaged tempers differ in strength and stress corrosion resistance. The temper on the drawing is binding.
Using 7075 for thick plate
At the center of thick plate 7075 does not reach full strength. For thick plate, 7010 or 7050.
