7049-T7352 Aluminum
A 7000-series Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloy, for forgings and extrusions with high stress corrosion resistance
Typical values for the temper in the title
7049 contains more zinc than 7075, so in the overaged T73 temper it keeps relatively high strength while remaining very resistant to stress corrosion cracking. In T7352 its tensile strength is about 515 MPa.
It is used mainly for thick forgings and extrusions in aerospace, in parts under sustained load where 7075-T6 would be risky.

Common tempers
As with all aerospace 7xxx alloys, the choice is between strength and stress corrosion resistance.
| Temper | Properties | When to choose it |
|---|---|---|
| T73 / T7352 | Rm ≈ 515 MPa, Rp0.2 ≈ 450 MPa (T7352) | overaged: high stress corrosion resistance |
| T76 | higher strength | exfoliation resistance, moderate stress corrosion resistance |
Applications
- Thick aerospace forgings
- Bulkheads and structural parts
- Extrusions under sustained load
- Landing gear parts and supports
- Forged parts with high corrosion resistance
Fabrication
Machining
Machines well. The stress-relieved tempers (Tx51) allow a lot of material to be removed without significant distortion.
Welding
Fusion welding is not recommended. Friction stir welding (FSW) is possible.
Corrosion and protection
The overaged tempers improve resistance to stress corrosion cracking and exfoliation, but protection is still applied: conversion coating, anodizing and paint.
Compared with similar materials
| Material | Rm / Rp0.2 | Welding | When it is the better choice |
|---|---|---|---|
| 7075-T6 | 503–572 / 434–503 MPa | Not recommended — FSW | similar strength in T6, but much more sensitive · material page |
| 7175-T74 | 490 / 420 MPa | Not recommended | a refined 7075 version for forgings · material page |
| 7050-T7451 | 496–531 / 434–469 MPa | Not recommended | for thick plate · material page |
Common mistakes
Welding
7xxx alloys with copper are not suited to fusion welding. Join with rivets and bolts.
Substituting a temper without checking
The overaged tempers differ in strength and stress corrosion resistance. The temper on the drawing is binding.
Using 7075-T6 for a thick forging under sustained load
That invites stress corrosion cracking. For such a part, 7049-T73.
