AZ80A Magnesium
A high-strength wrought magnesium alloy for forgings
Typical values for the temper in the title
AZ80A contains about 8.5% aluminum and 0.5% zinc, and is among the strongest wrought Mg-Al-Zn alloys. It can be aged (T5) to higher strength.
It is used mainly for loaded forgings: aerospace, space and motorsport parts, and light wheels.

Tempers
Wrought magnesium alloys are supplied in several tempers: annealed (O), strain hardened (H) or artificially aged (T5). Magnesium crystal structure (HCP) has few slip planes, so cold forming is limited, and forming is done warm (about 200–300 °C).
| Temper | Properties | When to choose it |
|---|---|---|
| F (as forged) | good strength | forgings |
| T5 (aged) | higher strength | loaded parts |

Fabrication
Safety: fire
Fine chips, dust and grinding residue of magnesium are highly flammable and burn very hot. Use sharp tools and coarse chips, do not accumulate dust and chips, and keep a Class D extinguisher. Never use water: water intensifies the fire. A large solid part does not ignite easily.
Corrosion and galvanic contact
Magnesium is the least noble structural metal. In contact with steel, copper, stainless or even aluminum in the presence of moisture, it corrodes fast. Isolate contacts, protect with a conversion coating and paint, and use suitable fasteners.
Welding
Difficult: crack-prone (database: "Difficult — cracking").

Common mistakes
Putting out a magnesium fire with water
Water intensifies the fire. Use a Class D extinguisher or dry sand.
Coupling directly to steel or stainless
Rapid galvanic corrosion of the magnesium.
Using a wrong DIN number
The material number of AZ80 is 3.5812. The number 3.5162, given in some sources, does not belong to it.
