Nomex Honeycomb
A non-metallic, light, fire-resistant core
Typical values for the temper in the title
Nomex honeycomb is made of aramid (Nomex) paper impregnated with phenolic resin. Compared with aluminum it is non-metallic, does not corrode, insulates, is fire resistant with low smoke, and forms better to curved shapes.
It is the common core in aircraft interiors (floors, partitions, overhead bins), and is also used in radomes, space panels and sporting goods. Drawbacks: higher cost, and it absorbs moisture.

Constructions and versions
In a honeycomb core, material, cell size and density are chosen. Higher density gives a stronger, stiffer and heavier core.
| Version | Properties | When to choose it |
|---|---|---|
| Hexagonal cells | maximum stiffness | flat panels |
| Overexpanded cells (OX) | forms to curvature | curved parts |
| High density | stronger | floors |
Applications
- Aircraft floors and partitions
- Overhead bins
- Radomes
- Space panels
- Sporting goods
Fabrication
Moisture
Absorbs moisture, which changes properties and weight. Seal edges and dry as needed.
Joining
Through bonded inserts.
Machining
Cutting with special knives and ultrasonic saws.

Common mistakes
Leaving edges open in a humid environment
The core absorbs moisture.
Choosing Nomex when a very strong core is needed
Aluminum is stronger and stiffer at the same density.
Screwing directly
The core crushes.

Values are typical and for comparison only. In composites, properties depend strongly on fiber direction, fiber content, layup and process. For design, rely on data for the specific laminate and tests. The standards mentioned are mainly test methods (ASTM D3039, D3410, D2344 and others).
