S275 Steel
A European structural steel, 275 MPa yield
Typical values for the temper in the title
S275 is a structural steel per EN 10025-2. The number gives the minimum yield strength: 275 MPa (for thickness up to 16 mm). It is slightly stronger than S235, and still easy to weld.
It is common in sections and plates for structures, frames and industrial buildings. The letters after the number (JR, J0, J2) indicate the temperature at which impact toughness is tested.

Values per EN 10025-2, for thickness up to 16 mm (Salzgitter and ArcelorMittal data). Limits change for greater thickness. CEV per EN 1011-2: C + Mn/6 + (Cr+Mo+V)/5 + (Ni+Cu)/15.
Conditions and heat treatment
Structural, pressure and pipeline steels are selected by minimum yield strength and impact toughness at a given temperature, not by a heat treatment the user performs. The delivery condition is defined by the standard.
| Condition | Properties | When to choose it |
|---|---|---|
| JR | 27 J at +20 °C | normal use, indoor structures |
| J0 | 27 J at 0 °C | outdoor structures in mild climates |
| J2 | 27 J at -20 °C | outdoor structures, dynamic loads |
Applications
- Sections and beams
- Structural plates
- Frames and industrial buildings
- Welded structures
- General parts
Fabrication
Welding
Welds well by all common methods. The need for preheat is set by CEV, thickness and joint restraint (EN 1011-2).
Machining
Reasonable, like a low-carbon steel.
Corrosion
Rusts. Paint or galvanizing is needed.

Common mistakes
Ordering "S275" without a sub-grade
JR, J0 and J2 differ in cold impact toughness. The engineer decides by environment.
Using the 16 mm yield for a thick plate
In thick sections the minimum yield is lower.
Substituting A36 as if identical
Yield and requirements differ.
