Typical values for the temper in the title

Ti-6246 is an α+β alloy with more molybdenum (about 6%) than Ti-6242. Molybdenum increases hardenability, so in thick sections it reaches much higher strength than Ti-6Al-4V: about 1100–1170 MPa in the solution treated and aged (STA) condition.

It keeps strength at moderate temperatures (up to about 400–450 °C), and is used for disks and compressor parts in jet engines, and high-strength structural parts in thick sections.

Applications

Fabrication

Machining

Harder than Ti-6Al-4V because of the high strength. Low speed and sharp tools.

Welding

Limited. Parts are usually forged and machined.

Thick sections

Its main advantage over Ti-6Al-4V is high strength even at the center of a thick section.

Common mistakes

Confusing it with Ti-6242

6242 is meant for heat (creep), 6246 for strength.

Machining with Ti-6Al-4V parameters

It is stronger and wears tools faster.

Expecting strength without STA

Full strength comes from the heat treatment.
