Ti-6Al-7Nb Titanium
An α+β titanium alloy for implants
Typical values for the temper in the title
Ti-6Al-7Nb was developed as a medical alternative to Ti-6Al-4V: niobium replaces vanadium as the beta stabilizer, and is considered more biocompatible. Mechanical properties are very similar (minimum 900 MPa strength and 800 MPa yield).
It is used for orthopedic implants (hips, bone screws, plates), dental implants and surgical instruments, per ASTM F1295 and ISO 5832-11.

Chemical composition (wt %)
| Element | Range | Role |
|---|---|---|
| Al aluminum | 5.50–6.50 | alpha stabilizer, strength |
| Nb niobium | 6.50–7.50 | beta stabilizer, instead of vanadium |
| Ta tantalum | max 0.50 | |
| Fe iron | max 0.25 | |
| O oxygen | max 0.20 |
Ranges per ASTM F1295. Minimum mechanical properties per S+D Metals.
Conditions and heat treatment
Ti-6Al-7Nb is supplied annealed or hot rolled, per F1295.
| Condition | Properties | When to choose it |
|---|---|---|
| Annealed | Rm ≥900, Rp ≥800 MPa | implants |
Applications
- Hip and knee implants
- Bone screws and plates
- Dental implants
- Surgical instruments
- Medical parts
Fabrication
Machining
Like Ti-6Al-4V: low speed, continuous feed and flood coolant.
Cleanliness
Implants have cleaning and passivation requirements, and full material traceability.
Welding
Possible with full shielding, but implants are usually not welded.

Common mistakes
Using an industrial certificate for an implant
An implant requires material to F1295 with full traceability.
Expecting properties different from Ti-6Al-4V
The properties are very similar.
Using it for a wearing joint surface
Titanium galls. For joint surfaces, cobalt-chromium.
