Beta C Titanium
A beta titanium alloy
Typical values for the temper in the title
Beta C is a beta alloy: a large amount of beta stabilizers (vanadium, chromium, molybdenum) keeps a beta structure when solution treated, so it is ductile and easy to cold form and draw into wire. On aging it strengthens greatly (about 1200–1400 MPa, typical).
It is used for aerospace springs and fasteners, drilling equipment and parts in oil and gas (thanks to good corrosion resistance in sour environments), and light high-strength structural parts. In ASTM B348 it is Grade 19.
Mechanical and physical properties
| Property | Value | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Tensile strength Rm | ≈1200–1400 MPa (aged, typical) | typical, depends on treatment |
| Modulus of elasticity E | ≈105 GPa | |
| Density ρ | 4.82 g/cm³ | |
| Machinability | 20% | relative rating in the site database |
Chemical composition (wt %)
| Element | Range | Role |
|---|---|---|
| V vanadium | 7.5–8.5 | beta stabilizer |
| Cr chromium | 5.5–6.5 | beta stabilizer |
| Mo molybdenum | 3.5–4.5 | beta stabilizer |
| Zr zirconium | 3.5–4.5 | strength |
| Al aluminum | 3.0–4.0 | age strengthening |
Ranges per ASTM B348 Grade 19 (Rolled Alloys). Table strength is typical for the aged condition, and depends on the treatment.
Conditions and heat treatment
Beta C is formed in the solution treated condition, and gains strength by aging.
| Condition | Properties | When to choose it |
|---|---|---|
| Solution treated | ductile, for cold forming and wire drawing | manufacturing |
| Aged | very high strength | the finished part |
Applications
- Aerospace springs
- Bolts and fasteners
- Oil and gas drilling equipment
- Parts in sour environments
- Light structural parts
Fabrication
Forming
In the solution treated state it cold forms easily, unlike most titanium alloys.
Machining
Difficult, especially aged.
Welding
Possible with full shielding, with aging after welding.

Common mistakes
Forming after aging
Aged, it is strong and less ductile. Form before.
Ignoring density
It is heavier than Ti-6Al-4V (about 4.82).
Expecting strength when solution treated
Strength comes from aging.
