๐ฆ Step 1 โ Raw Material
How much material do you need to buy to produce one part? The finished part's weight is multiplied by the waste factor (BTF) โ because more material always goes in than remains in the finished part.
Weigh the part or calculate from CAD. Not the raw stock โ the finished part!
How many kg of raw stock you need to buy for every kg of finished part. BTF 1.3 = 30% waste.

โ๏ธ Step 2 โ Machining
How long it takes to set up the machine (Setup) and how long the machine runs on each part. Setup is divided across the whole quantity โ the more parts, the lower the setup cost per part.
Machine setup time: fixturing, tool setting, zero setting, first-article run. If there are 2 OPs (setups) โ add both together.
How many minutes the machine runs on one part, including all operations (OPs). A simple pin = 2-5 minutes. A complex part = 60-120 minutes.
Machine hour rate including: operator, machine depreciation, electricity, cutting tools, coolant. A more advanced machine = a higher rate.
The larger the quantity, the lower the setup cost per part. 1 part = expensive. 1000 parts = cheap.

๐จ Step 3 โ Finish, Inspection & Extras
Additional costs after machining: coating (anodize, zinc...), heat treatment (hardening), quality inspection, and cleaning/finishing. Not every part needs everything โ select only what's relevant.
A protective coating against corrosion/wear. Price per part at medium series.
Hardening, softening, or improving mechanical properties. Required for steels that need hardness.
Measurement, report, CMM. A simple part = basic inspection. Aerospace = full FAI + CMM.
Removing burrs, edge breaking, cleaning. Almost every part requires at least manual deburring.

Overhead = costs not directly tied to the part: rent, electricity, insurance, management, coolant. Typically 25-40%.
Margin = what's left for the shop after all expenses. 15-25% is typical in Israel.
