3005-H14 Aluminum
A 3000-series Al-Mn-Mg alloy, between 3003 and 3004
Typical values for the temper in the title
3005 is 3003 with about 0.4% magnesium added. The magnesium adds strength, so it is stronger than 3003 while still forming and welding well. In H14 its tensile strength is 150–195 MPa.
It is used for roofing and painted building sheet, gutters, heat exchangers and fins.

Common tempers
As in the whole 3000 series, the alloy is not heat treatable, and the temper describes the degree of strain hardening.
| Temper | Properties | When to choose it |
|---|---|---|
| O | soft | for forming |
| H14 / H24 | Rm 150–195 MPa (H14) | building sheet |
| H18 | hard | fins and flat sheet |
Applications
- Roofing and painted building sheet
- Gutters and drainage parts
- Heat exchangers and fins
- General sheet
- Lids
Fabrication
Forming
Forms well in the soft tempers, less well in the hard ones.
Welding
Welds well; in the weld zone the material returns to the annealed condition.
Finishing
Particularly suited to painting on continuous coil-coating lines.
Compared with similar materials
| Material | Rm / Rp0.2 | Welding | When it is the better choice |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3003-H14 | 150–180 / 115–145 MPa | Excellent | no magnesium, slightly weaker · material page |
| 3004-H19 | 215 / 195 MPa | Excellent | more magnesium and strength · material page |
| 3105-H14 | 150 / 130 MPa | Excellent | for painted sheet, at lower strength · material page |
Common mistakes
Choosing 3005 for a structural part
Its strength is low. For a load-bearing part, 5052 or 6061.
Trying to harden it by heat treatment
3005 is not heat treatable.
Confusing it with 3003 in a specification
They are close, but the composition differs. If the drawing names one of them, follow it.
