3105-H14 Aluminum
A 3000-series Al-Mn-Mg alloy, for painted sheet and closures
Typical values for the temper in the title
3105 contains about half a percent each of manganese and magnesium. It is slightly weaker than 3003, but particularly suited to thin sheet painted on continuous coil-coating lines. In H14 its tensile strength is about 150 MPa.
It is used for house siding, gutters, signs and screw-on bottle closures.

Common tempers
As in the whole 3000 series, the alloy is not heat treatable, and the temper describes the degree of strain hardening.
| Temper | Properties | When to choose it |
|---|---|---|
| O | soft | for forming |
| H14 / H24 | Rm ≈ 150 MPa (H14) | painted sheet |
| H25 / H28 | harder | closures |
Applications
- House siding and painted building sheet
- Gutters
- Signs
- Screw-on bottle closures
- General thin sheet
Fabrication
Forming
Forms well in the soft tempers, less well in the hard ones.
Welding
Welds well; in the weld zone the material returns to the annealed condition.
Finishing
Tuned for continuous painting, and the paint holds well in forming after painting.

Common mistakes
Choosing 3105 for a load-bearing part
Its strength is too low for a structural part.
Trying to harden it by heat treatment
3105 is not heat treatable.
Choosing 3105 for anodizing
For architectural anodizing, 5005 is better suited.
