Typical values for the temper in the title

360 is a die casting alloy with about 9.5% silicon and about half a percent magnesium, and almost no copper. Compared with A380, it is more corrosion resistant, pressure tight and stronger when hot. As cast, its tensile strength is about 320 MPa.

The drawback: it is harder to cast than A380. So it is chosen when the part is exposed to the environment or heat, such as outdoor enclosures, marine parts and small engine housings.

Applications

Fabrication

Casting

Harder than A380: needs better process control.

Corrosion

More resistant than A380, thanks to its low copper.

Welding and heat treatment

Like all high-pressure die castings, not suited to welding or heat treatment.

Common mistakes

Choosing A380 for an exposed outdoor part

A380 is less corrosion resistant. For an exposed part, 360.

Sending it for heat treatment

A high-pressure die casting may blister.

Welding

Trapped gas creates porosity.
