413.0 Aluminum
A eutectic Al-Si casting alloy, for die casting thin, pressure-tight parts
Typical values for the temper in the title
413 contains about 12% silicon, the eutectic composition. It solidifies at almost a single temperature, so it is one of the most fluid alloys and is especially suited to thin, complex, pressure-tight parts. As die cast, its tensile strength is about 290 MPa.
It is used for hydraulic parts, pump housings and thin-walled parts. It is not heat treatable, and its high silicon makes machining harder.

Fabrication
Casting
Excellent fluidity and high pressure tightness.
Machining
The high silicon wears tools.
Welding
High-pressure die castings are not suited to welding because of trapped gas.

Common mistakes
Sending it for heat treatment
413 is not heat treatable, and a die casting may blister.
Welding
Trapped gas creates porosity.
Planning heavy machining
The silicon wears tools. Design the casting close to final shape.
