Haynes 282
A fabricable nickel-based superalloy
Typical values for the temper in the title
Haynes 282 was developed to solve a known superalloy problem: strong alloys such as Waspaloy and René 41 are hard to fabricate and tend to crack after welding. In 282 the amount of γ' is "balanced", so it keeps high strength and creep resistance and can still be formed and welded.
It is used in hot sections of gas turbines and jet engines, and in advanced power plants.

Conditions and heat treatment
Such superalloys are hardened by solution treatment and aging, which forms γ' particles (Ni3(Al,Ti)) that give the strength at temperature.
| Condition | Properties | When to choose it |
|---|---|---|
| Annealed | formable and weldable | forming and welding |
| Aged | about 1017 MPa tensile (database value) | the finished part |
Applications
- Hot gas-turbine parts
- Jet engine sheet parts
- Advanced power plants
- Casings and rings
- Welded parts for heat
Fabrication
Welding
Welds far better than Waspaloy and René 41: designed to resist strain-age cracking.
Machining
Nickel alloys work harden, stay strong when hot, and wear tools. Use low speed, a steady feed that does not "rub", sharp rigid tools and plenty of coolant.
Fabrication
This is its main advantage: superalloy strength with formability and weldability.
Compared with similar materials
| Material | Rm / Rp0.2 | Welding | When it is the better choice |
|---|---|---|---|
| Waspaloy | 1275 / 790 MPa | Complex | similar strength, harder to fabricate · material page |
| René 41 | 1310 / 965 MPa | Difficult | stronger, very hard to weld · material page |
| Inconel 718 | 1240–1380 / 1035–1170 MPa | Good — ERNiCrMo-6 | cheaper, for lower heat · material page |
Common mistakes
Assuming it welds like stainless
It is relatively easy for a superalloy, but still needs a procedure.
Looking for its W.Nr
Some sources give 2.4650, but that is the number of Alloy 263, a different alloy.
Aging before welding
Weld annealed and age afterwards.
