Waspaloy
A γ'-strengthened nickel-based superalloy
Typical values for the temper in the title
Waspaloy contains about 19% chromium, 12–15% cobalt, 3.5–5% molybdenum, and titanium and aluminum additions that form γ' particles on aging. These particles are stable at higher temperatures than those of Inconel 718, so Waspaloy keeps strength and creep resistance at higher temperatures.
It is used for turbine and compressor discs, rings, shafts, fasteners and other rotating parts in jet engines and gas turbines. The cost: it is very hard to machine and weld.

Conditions and heat treatment
Such superalloys are hardened by solution treatment and aging, which forms γ' particles (Ni3(Al,Ti)) that give the strength at temperature.
| Condition | Properties | When to choose it |
|---|---|---|
| Solution treated | relatively soft | machining |
| Solution treated, stabilized and aged | about 1275 MPa tensile (database value) | the finished part |
Applications
- Turbine and compressor discs
- Jet engine rings and shafts
- Fasteners for hot service
- Seals and casings
- Missile parts
Fabrication
Welding
Difficult to weld: alloys with high Al+Ti are prone to strain-age cracking after welding and heat treatment. Weld solution treated, with a controlled procedure.
Machining
Nickel alloys work harden, stay strong when hot, and wear tools. Use low speed, a steady feed that does not "rub", sharp rigid tools and plenty of coolant.
Heat
Keeps strength at higher temperatures than 718.
Compared with similar materials
| Material | Rm / Rp0.2 | Welding | When it is the better choice |
|---|---|---|---|
| Inconel 718 | 1240–1380 / 1035–1170 MPa | Good — ERNiCrMo-6 | easier to machine and weld, for lower heat · material page |
| René 41 | 1310 / 965 MPa | Difficult | even stronger, even harder to fabricate · material page |
| Haynes 282 | 1017 / 700 MPa | Good | similar strength, easier to fabricate · material page |
Common mistakes
Welding an aged part
High cracking risk. Weld solution treated.
Machining with 718 parameters
Waspaloy is harder to machine.
Departing from the heat treatment
Microstructure and properties are process-sensitive.
